At Mourne Dew Distillery, we’ve embraced the allure of the Pooka, weaving its enchanting narrative into the essence of our poitín products. Poitín, deeply rooted in Irish tradition as a spirited libation often associated with clandestine distillation, found a natural companion in the Pooka. Legend has it that after a spirited evening of poitín indulgence, one might whimsically blame the Pooka for a wild ride—perhaps transforming into a hare or a horse and whisking the drinker away on a fantastical journey, only to return them home shaken and with a memorable hangover.
Our poitín labels proudly depict the Pooka in its transformative glory, capturing moments of metamorphosis from hare to horse. This mystical creature, traditionally honored on November 1st as “the Pooka’s day,” symbolizes both the capricious nature of the faerie realm and the spirited essence of poitín.
